MMMMEEEEERRRRRCCCCKKKKKK!

Are you a chemist? Do you like doing chemistry? Merck, the pharmaceutical company, would like to know if you want to be a materials handler in Ireland, a command center technician, a statistics intern or a pipefitter. No?

How about an operations coach? What's that, you say? Well, I'm glad you asked. You will:
  • Coach production employees in an Empowered Culture
  • Assist the team with development of objectives and ensures alignment with site goals
  • Assess employee training and development needs, assesses the maturity of the team, and adjusts leadership style to enhance team performance
"Assess the maturity of the team" -- hmmm. If you read between the lines, I think you'll be a (assistant?) manufacturing plant manager. But why in the world couldn't they just call it that? (h/t See Arr Oh)

    The true source of frustration with the Merck-non-chemistry-job-posting is the unwillingness of the C&EN staff to respond to e-mails addressing this issue.

    Pipefitting can be outsourced to the local plumber (hopefully unionized) but not to India or China. That is good news for the plumber! The last time I needed a plumber he charge me at an hourly rate that was 2X what my company paid its best PhD chemists. That guy still pulls in a paycheck, but the chemist all saw their jobs head offshore.

    You can probably reasonably assume that whatever they pay an "operations coach" it is more that they pay a chemist. Hell, we had admins who were better paid than new PhD chemists.

    I think a PhD chemist would make a very good plumber. At least I always considered it as a possible career alternative for myself.

    I think chemists would be more empowered if their salaries and job security weren't shrinking! Perhaps instead of hiring another middle-manager to enforce an empowered culture they should give their chemists a raise!
