The Department of Chemistry at the University of Maine (Orono, ME) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry (tenure-track) to begin September 1, 2016 (candidates who would not be available until 1 January 2017 also will be considered). The successful candidate is expected to teach organic chemistry at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and introductory chemistry. Establishment of a strong, extramurally funded research program is essential. Collaboration with the University’s Signature and Emerging Areas and research centers is encouraged. Other duties include student advising and appropriate department or university service. Consideration of applications will begin 25 January 2016 and continue until the position is filled.

Having grown up on the New England coast, I can say that Maine is a really beautiful place (and not just for the lobster!) although a little off the main track (pun intended). I saw this advert a while back; strange that it is so difficult for them to find qualified candidates.
ReplyDeleteUMe has added a couple of organic faculty past few years. Orono is pretty, but pretty isolated (2.5 h drive to closest Whole Foods, but flights out of BGR take off in really amazingly poor weather) and salaries are poor. I'd take UMe over SDSU (South Dakota State) or USask any day.
ReplyDeleteBTR, I checked out the desired research interests & of the successful candidate at UMe & their infrastructure. They are very ......unique. After having had bad experience as TT faculty at a remote location which suddenly changed its research mandate, I'd be leery about such a job.
